Mermaid Series
An ongoing series. Mermaid lore from all over the world.
Our world is far too divided these days. Some of my passions are folklore, learning about other cultures, and bringing people together. This is what I'm bringing to my mermaid series.
Baseline: My Mermaid
My personal mermaid baseline. What do I picture a mermaid to look like based on mermaid imagery I was raised with? This is her.
Software: Procreate. Traditional Materials: Arches watercolor cold 140 lb. paper, watercolors, watercolor pencils.
Japan: Ama Mermaid

-The Piece-
This mermaid in particular is inspired by my mermaid studies of Japan. During my research, I stumbled on Ama divers and Japanese cormorant fishermen. I made this mermaid an Ama diver and incorporated her into a scene of Japanese cormorant fishers. The mermaid unexpectedly comes upon them while they are fishing, drawn to the light of the flame they use to attract the fish.
